I’m hoping that now, this is a door opening rather than a window in a breeze. It’s just that when you can see yourself in your own experience, it can really be transformative. But that wave crested in the late 80s and we went back to more of the status quo. People were talking about these women and it felt like something was really different. Alice Walker won a Pulitzer, Beloved was out. When I was very young, there was this wave of African-American women writers. What I’m hoping is that this isn’t a wave. Scared to admit her realization and risk judgement, the girl simply says “maybe”.For a while, you’ve wanted more women in more books to have a voice. Leslie tells her that she seems a bit distracted and jokingly asks if she’s thinking about Bobby. As they leave the girl realizes that she’s in love with Phylis. The girl messes up her recruitment sermon, but the woman is very nice, offers them drinks and hears out their philosophy. She knocks on the door and is greeted by a woman named Phylis. Leslie leaves the girl in charge of this house. She continues knocking on doors with Leslie and they come to a house that looks like it’s owned by a hippie. Being one of the only Black members of the congregation and in the town at all, she feels like an outcast. The congregation has also pretty much decided for her that she will marry a white boy named Bobby who she loves as a friend but is not attracted to at all. She is aware that the congregation is using Leslie to try to groom her into a full time recruiter. The girl is facing a bit of a dilemma because she has to make the decision to either leave for college or continue to preach the gospel as a Jehovah’s Witness full time. Their job is to knock on doors and preach their gospel to the community in the middle of the summer heat. An 18 year old Black girl has been traveling through an “unassigned territory” in North Carolina with a sort of mentor figure named Leslie.
